Roughly 20 percent of all American men are missing from the workforce. The intent of this Brookings Institution-funded project is to understand why, beyond the statistics, and from the men's point of view.
Because the researcher and author could not travel the nation in search of these men, he needed a platform through which he could lay out his hypothesis, and in return receive anecdotal evidence and leads for potential interviews from the men in this difficult to reach demographic. The target audience is roughly one-fifth of the U.S. male population, for whom the American dream is just that and worse – out of reach.

American Phenomena:
At this time the project is endeavoring to draw men to the site to participate in one or two, depending on age, questionnaires. No one really enjoys market survey, so a non-standard, flowing form was employed.
